Therefore it was decided that the first day of Zul-Hijja was Sunday Feb 25, 2001, accordingly Eid-ul-Adha starts on Tuesday March 6, 2001. They release this decision at around 12:01 am Saturday Feb 24, 2001 after detail discussion of available evidence. In local Richmond area, there were no reported sightings of moon on the evening of Friday February 23, 2001.

| Wednesday, February 21, 2001 - 08:48 am Zul-Hijjah 1421 A.H. New moon for this month will be born on Friday February 23, 2001 at 3:21 AM EST. At 5:57 PM EST sunset time, moon will be only 14 hours old and with only 0.5% visibility. Muslim astronomers agree that it will be impossible for the moon to be visible on Friday evening in North America. However, next day Saturday February 24, 2001, at sunset time with the visibility of 2.6%, its possible to see the moon. Therefore first day of Zul-Hijjah is expected to be Sunday February 25, 2001, and Eid-ul-Adha to start on Tuesday March 6, 2001.

| Tuesday, November 28, 2000 - 07:46 am In North America, Ramadan started on Monday November 27, 2000. According to Islamic Shura Council of North America, moon was sited in Texas and Arizona. New moon for Ramadan 1421 A.H. was born on Saturday November 25, 2000 at 7:11 pm. It was impossible to see the moon on Saturday as sunset occurred at 4:53 pm. On Sunday November 26, 2000 sunset occurred at 4:53 pm but moon did not set until 5:40 pm. Even then, moon was not seen by ISGR in metro Richmond area as it was only 0.9% illuminated and there were some clouds on the horizon. However, close to 7:50 pm Sunday November 26, 2000, national organizations like ISNA and ICNA announced that there were confirmed moon sightings in Texas and Arizona. Local Imams in metro Richmond made the joint decision to start the Ramadan on Monday November 27, 2000. Local Masajids had their first Taraweeh on the evening of Sunday November 26, 2000.
