First day of Zul-Hijja 1422 AH

There were no moon sightings in metro Richmond area on the evening of Tuesday February 12, 2002. Majority of Imams in metro Richmond area have decided that Eid-ul-Adha will start from Saturday February 23, 2002. They will finalize the time and the Imam for the prayers soon.

According to ISNA Wednesday February 13, 2002 Afternoon:

"The National Shura Council and the Fiqh Council decided, based on procedures of local moon sighting, the hilal was not sighted anywhere in North America on February 12th, which was the 29th day of Zhul Qa’dah. Therefore, the 10th of Zhul Hijjah will fall on Saturday, February 23rd."

and same day, according to Moonsighting.com:

"10th Zul-Hijjah in North America will be on Feb 23, 2002, Saturday. Moon was not seen anywhere in North America on Feb 12"

Virtually impossible to see the moon on the evening of February 12, 2002

According to moonsighting.com moon may be sighted in Hawaii.

Next day Wednesday February 13, 2002

Sunset = 5:47 PM EST
Moonset = 7:07 PM EST
Visibility at Sunset= 2.6 percent
Moon Age at Sunset= About 39 Hours

Moon is expected to be clearly visible. Hence first day of Zul Hijja inshallah is expected to be Thursday February 14, 2002. Hence Eid-ul-Adha (10th of Zul Hijja) base on moon sighting may start on Saturday February 23, 2002.

Therefore its possible to see the Moon. Hence first day of Zul Qa'dah inshallah is expected to be Tuesday January 15, 2002.

First day of Shawal 1422 AH, Eid-ul-Fitr

There were no reported moon sighting in Metro Richmond on Friday December 14, 2001.

According to ICNA

"The National Islamic Shura Council of North America with the consultation of Islamic Fiqh Council of North America has decided that based on the indisputable astronomical information of a Solar Eclipse occurring on the afternoon of Friday, December 14, 2001, and upon the recommendation of experts, the Hilal of Shawwal 1422 AH will not be visible on the evening of Friday, December 14, 2001, from anywhere in the world.

So, Insha Allah, Eid ul Fitr will be on Sunday, December 16, 2001."

Visibility = 1.2 percent

There might not be any local sighting as moon will be very thin.

"Remember, on Dec 14, it would be a solar eclipse and crescent cannot be seen on that day anywhere in the world. So, if sighting is a criterion, Eid cannot be on Dec 15. Accordingly, Dec 16 (Sunday) would be Eid in North America"

"According to Shura Council's decision, the moon has been sighted in North America on 11/15. Therefore the First of Ramadan will be on Friday" (ICNA)

According to Moonsighting.com "Sha'ban moon is sighted by naked eye from Mombasa (Kenya), many places in S. Africa, Trinidad, Guyana, Feyettville NC, Opa Locka FL, and Buena Park CA on October 17 just as expected by calculations."

New moon for this month will born on Tuesday October 16, 2001 at 3:23 PM. At 6:31 PM sunset time, moon will be only about three hours old and only 0.1 % visible. However next day Wednesday October 17, 2001 6:29 PM sunset time it will be possible, although hard to see the moon as it will be 1.9% illuminated and aged more than 24 hours. Therefore first day of Shabaan 1422 AH is expected to be Thursday October 18, 2001.

Rajab moon was not sighted anywhere in USA on Sep 17. It was also not seen in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bosnia. However, on Sep 18, it was seen as East as Maldives, then in Saudi Arabia, then in Turkey, then in Jordan, and of course in USA

New moon for this month will born on Monday September 17,2001 at 5:27 AM EDST. At 7:15 PM EDST sunset time, moon will be only 0.6% visible and about 14 hours old. It will be virtually impossible to see the moon. However on Tuesday September 18, 2001, at 7:14 PM EDST sunset time moon will be 3.7% illuminated. Its possible for moon to be visible, therefore first day of Rajab 1422 AH is expected to be Wednesday September 19, 2001.

On Sunday August 19 2001, crescent for Jumad Thani was seen by telescope in Jordan, and by naked eye in Florida, Utah, Arizona, and California, just as calculated. The crescent moon was not sighted in South Africa on Sunday August 19, 2001.

Next day Sunday August 19, 2001 at 7:56 PM EDST sunset time moon will be almost 21 hours of age but only 1.4% illuminated. So its possible to see the moon, although it might be very thin. So the first day of Rabi Thani 1422 AH is expected to be on Monday August 20, 2001.

However next day on Saturday July 21, 2001 at Maghrib time moon will be quite old and 2.2 % visible. So its possible that moon will be visible on that evening.

Next evening Sunday March 25, 2001 moon will be about 22 hours old at 6:26 PM EST the time for sunset, its possible to see the moon but with difficulty due to 1.0 % visibility. Moon will be visible until 7:09 PM EST. Base on this, new Islamic year 1422 AH or 1st of Muharram is expected to be on Monday March 26, 2001.
